Invibio at the PEEK and UHMWPE 2024 Meeting in Barcelona

Invibio
We are thrilled to share that Invibio was invited to participate in the Implant Polymers: PEEK and UHMWPE Conference 2024 in Barcelona! This prestigious event brought together engineers, scientists, regulators, and clinicians from academia, industry, and government sectors to discuss the latest advancements in medical-grade UHMWPE, PEEK, and the rapidly evolving field of polymer implant additive manufacturing technology. This year’s conference particularly emphasized the growing field of point-of-care additive manufacturing of implantable polymers, a crucial area for our polymer implant communities.

Dr. Dharmesh Patel's Insightful Presentation

Dr. Dharmesh Patel, Strategic Technology Manager at Invibio, delivered a compelling presentation titled "Exploration of PEEK Polymer Materials in Additive Manufacturing for Advanced Medical Applications & Pre-clinical Study Data." His talk delivered insights into PEEK-OPTIMA™ forms for 3D printing applications and their clinical benefits, notably in spinal cages. For a deeper dive into this topic, check out our webinar featuring Professor William Walsh who is a pioneer in research in this area.

Key Highlights from Dr. Patel’s Presentation:

Dr. Patel also shared valuable market feedback on how additive manufacturing with PEEK-OPTIMA™ facilitates innovative designs with complex geometries that traditional processes cannot achieve. Introduction of porous structures, for example, offers the potential for increased bone ingrowth and earlier fixation of devices to improve clinical outcomes, whilst the technology may allow a more cost-effective solution when tooling is expensive or just-in-time production is required. He also proudly introduced PEEK-OPTIMA™  AM Filament, Invibio’s first implantable 3D printable filament tailored for Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) printing machines.

Other Conference Highlights:

The conference also featured exciting new data on the increasing interest in PEEK polymer orthopedic components.

  • Corine Post, PhD at Radboud University: Presented insights from a population-based FE study on the primary fixation of a cementless PEEK femoral and tibial component.
  • Cedric Boyhn, MD, Radiologist at AZ Monica Hospital: Discussed a comparative imaging study evaluating the performance of an all-polymer PEEK knee prosthesis.

These studies underscore the potential of PEEK materials and designs to revolutionize conventional implant technologies, offering improved clinical benefits and patient care.
