Can Spinal Rods Made of PEEK-OPTIMA Polymer Bridge the Current Treatment Gap

Three leading European surgeons to share their clinical findings and experience during EUROSPINE

On Wednesday 1 October at 12 noon, at EUROSPINE 2014 in Lyon, France, Invibio Biomaterials Solutions (“Invibio”) is hosting a symposium looking at how PEEK-OPTIMA Spinal Rod components offer a semi-rigid posterior fixation solution that can help bridge the gap between stiff all-metal constructs and dynamic treatment options. Invibio is a world-leading solutions provider of PEEK polymer-based biomaterials, manufacturing and R&D for medical device manufacturers.

During the session three leading European surgeons, Dr. Thierry Desjardins, Neurosurgeon (Cagnes-Sur-mer, France), Dr. Jacques Benezech (Montpellier, France) and Dr. Andreas Mavrogenis (Athens, Greece), will present individual clinical findings and discuss their experiences of using PEEK-OPTIMA spinal rods over the last three years. “The high stiffness inherent with all-metal constructs are believed to contribute to clinical challenges from rod breakage and screw loosening to accelerated degeneration at adjacent spinal segments which can all negatively impact a patient outcomes. PEEK-OPTIMA rods address these challenges and the feedback from the surgeons using these has been positive, and we’re looking forward to presenting at EUROSPINE 2014,” said Gilles Larroque, Invibio European Spine Marketing Manager.

Commenting on his planned contribution to the session, Dr. Thierry Desjardin, Neurosurgeon said “I have a lot of patients who need one level fixation and I’ve always been frightened to use too rigid a system and to destroy the adjacent levels in the future. To find a device to try to protect the adjacent level is for me very important. I think PEEK Rods can be the alternative and maybe can replace, time after time, the rigid posterior fixation.”

Device manufacturers and clinicians are invited to attend the discussion or visit the Invibio booth during the EUROSPINE 2014 meeting, #A34 in Hall 1/2/3, to learn more.
