Common questions about PEEK for medical implants

How does PEEK compare to titanium for spinal cages?
While titanium provides high strength, PEEK-OPTIMA™ offers sufficient strength along with a bone-like modulus, reducing stress shielding and promoting better load sharing. Its radiolucency enables surgeons to assess fusion progress using X-ray or CT and MRI without the image artefacts caused by metal. PEEK-OPITMA™ HA Enhanced grades support bone ongrowth throughout the entire implant surface giving the Osseo-integrative bone bonding benefits of titanium combined with the benefits of PEEK.
What makes PEEK suitable for permanent implants?
PEEK-OPTIMA™ combines biocompatibility with mechanical properties that closely match cortical bone, including reducing stress shielding. It is also radiolucent, enabling clear post-operative imaging without interference. The material has a 20+ year clinical history, with approximately 15 million devices implanted worldwide and zero material-related recalls. Its stability, non-reactivity during clinical use, and absence of cytotoxicity make it highly reliable for long-term implantation
What regulatory clearances have PEEK-OPTIMA been used in?
PEEK-OPTIMA™ materials are manufactured under an ISO 13485:2016 certified quality system. Additionally, Invibio maintains full supply chain control from monomer to finished polymer. The biomaterials meet ISO 10993 biocompatibility standards and have been used in hundreds of different devices that have been cleared for use in Globally approved devices, using pathways such as FDA 510(k) or the CE-mark. This heritage from over 25 years, resulting in use in over 15M+ implantations, is the reason that device companies can rely on our safety, reliability, quality and performance. Accessing our expert support in this area, helps compress your timeframes, reduce testing costs and lowers risk.
