PEEK-OPTIMA Ultra-Reinforced offers mechanical strength similar to metals but with reduced stiffness, making it well suited for applications where load sharing is desired to promote bone remodeling. A common drawback to metal fracture plates is their high stiffness relative to bone, which can cause stress shielding and delayed healing. Plates made of PEEK-OPTIMA Ultra-Reinforced allow semi-rigid fixation, which provides the potential for earlier healing due to its lower modulus and greater load sharing across the fracture site.

Bone plates made with PEEK-OPTIMA Ultra-Reinforced have also demonstrated very high fatigue strength. Dynamic ASTM F382 testing revealed that PEEK-OPTIMA Ultra-Reinforced plates offer more than an order of magnitude improvement in fatigue strength over similar Titanium plates. This advantage has the potential to prevent device failures related to high cyclical loading.

PEEK-OPTIMA Ultra-Reinforced provides material advantages in distal or humeral fracture plates, where its biologically inert properties reduce tissue adhesion to the implant. This can simplify implant removal and help to conserve bone during revision surgeries.

Finally, PEEK-OPTIMA Ultra-Reinforced is inherently radiolucent and allows artifact-free imaging. This makes it an excellent option for bone plates, as it provides clear visualization of the fracture site to assess healing and identify infection.
